Pawn Shops

I thought i was just throw this out there. How many of you guys actually shop around in pawn shops for BluRays.

i happen to stop in one by my house was looking for car speakers, and noticed they had probably 60 movies and alot of them sealed and brand new. i picked up National Treasure 2, Pirates of the Caribbean 3, and I Love you Man for 10.00 each still sealed.

Probably more of a Retail/Shopping thread, but good idea.

When I lived in Minneapolis, Pawn America was my best friend when I'd DVD hunt. I found pretty much any and all OOP discs known to man. The Car, Scarlett, Tool "Salival" CD/DVD a few times, 3 sets of the Full Moon Puppetmaster collection, a few copies of Beauty and the Beast sealed, tons of OOP WWF DVDs, you name it. Now that I am in NC, pawn shops seem to be few are far between.

Just recently moved to bluray and joined this site(awesome resource and community BTW) and have been utilizing pawn shops a lot for upgrading my collection. Can find some killer deals if you hunt around and live in a populated region. Here in Seattle I've been finding TONS of stuff at $9.99 or less. One shop had 5 copies of Band Of Brothers for $25 a piece. If you get in good with a manager at any of the stores, they can give ya discounts as well. I get 50% off from a shop a friend manages.

IN my line of work thats what we call "recovered stolen property", LOL

HAMP01-12-2010 05:56 AM

Around my area, the pawn shops think they are the retail store and charge the same prices.

I hate to say it but I have bought alot of dvd's ect from my local Pawn Shop. Now they have tons of Blu rays and they charge little or nothing for them. They even have some excellent surround sound systems for sale as well. So Pawn shops aint bad when your lookin for good deals.

Ah-ha, the Vick Mackey Avatar is starting to make sense, oink! Kidding, I've got family and friends that are LEOs.

Pawn shops make me feel unclean, but the cheap prices lure me back. BTW, I love that show Pawn Stars. It's like the white trash Antiques Roadshow.

Kryptonic01-14-2010 09:45 AM

I buy and sell at pawn shops. They give good prices on Blu-Ray's and the DVD's are cheap and you can usually find good stuff. I found the Silence of the Lambs Criterion Collection for $3 a few months back.

Ended up finding Yes Man, Miracle at St. Anna, and Notorious for $5 a pop today. Hot Rod was found for $10, quite happy!

Hello
Just got a blu ray player for xmas so i'm new to the forum, but have been reading posts for about a month now...as like most of you i'm going blu crazy and already have over 40 ...anyway I was in Boston for a little vacation last weekend and stepped into the Newbury Comics in Cambridge and found some great deals on some used blus...got:

Hairspray $3.99
Paul Blart Mall Cop $5.99
Made of Honor $5.99
Nights in Rodanthe $5.99
Secret Life of Bees $5.99

all were in excellent condition.....not the action movies that you guys normally go for but thought it would be cool to get some cheap movies to build my collection...maybe trade them down the road...they probably had more good deals but was kinda in a rush ....so if any of you are in the area check it out...also went to the Newbury Comics in the city on Newbury street....their prices seemed a little higher but there were some decent titles on sale there too

Jeff Kleist02-08-2010 01:15 AM

Their prices are higher because nearly all media you find in a pawn shop is shoplifted or otherwise stolen. They'll pay people next to nothing for them because they know they need to move them fast. Seriously, ask any GameStop employee. You're getting those prices because the pawnshop paid $1-2 each to some thief/junkie and wants to clear them out fast. Sure there's the occasional exception, but 90% of the people who bring their stuff to the pawn shop or gamestop seem to play through dozens of games/movies a week, oftentimes more than once and without taking the shrinkwrap off ;)

shanedalton02-08-2010 02:36 AM

I need to start checking out my local pawnshops.

I was watching Pawn Stars the other day and noticed a shelf of Blus over Rick's shoulder. All I could think was "Man, I'd love to go through those Blus over there." :-)

FirebirdKid02-08-2010 05:53 AM

sometimes you can get a good deal at the pawnshop especially if you buy in the bulk like it was costco and sams club. Walked off with a PS3 and 33 Blus for 250.

Anyone know how much they will give you for pawning in blu-rays?

What's the purpose of this thread, when there is one called "pawn shop scores" with multiple pages already?
