1968 Death Of A Smoker Dr Alton Ochsner Lecture Sermon Vinyl LP Record VG+Vinyl / Jacket Grade per Goldmine Standard: VG+ / VG+"The period of uncertainty is over. There is no longer any doubt that cigarette smoking is a direct threat to the user's health. There was a time when we spoke of the smoking health controversy. To my mind the days of argument are over." With these words Dr. Luther L. Perry. Chairman of the National Inter-Agency Council on Smoking and Health and former Surgeon General of the U. S. Public Health Service, opened the first world conference on smoking and health in September. 1967. Dr. Perry's words were confirmed by the current Surgeon General, Dr. William H. Stewart, who said, "the proposition that cigarette smoking is hazardous to human health ... is no longer controversial, it is flat scientific fact." The above statements are merely echoes of what Dr. Alton Ochsner has been saying for years. As early as 1954, Dr. Ochsner published his book, "Smoking and Cancer: A Doctor's Report." Dr. Alton Ochsner is President of the world famous Alton Ochsner Medical Foundation, New Orleans, Louisiana He is Director of Surgery at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital, New Orleans, and Emeritus Professor of Surgery at the School of Medicine, Tulane University Dr. Ochsner was Chairman of the Department of Surgery and the School of Medicine, Tulane University, from 1927 until 1956. The famous surgeon is committed to the fact that ours is a reasonable age that will listen to logic. He makes his appeal clear and direct, that whether or not one smokes has now become a life or death matter. The following record is noted with nothing but facts which can be supported medically. "The overall death rate from all causes was 105% higher among cigarette smokers than among non-smokers. The death rate from coronary disease was 115% higher among cigarette smokers than among non-smokers, and the death rate from lung cancer was 800% higher." Again Dr. Ochsner says, "If there was one-tenth the evidence that the Brooklyn Bridge was unsafe for traffic that we have that cancer of the lung is caused by cigarette smoking, the Brooklyn Bridge would be closed within twenty-four hours until it could be deter- mined whether it was safe or not." The following lecture not only holds out warning but hope to the smoker. He produces evidence to show how chances of lung cancer can be decreased in proportion to the length of time a person discontinues smoking. Those who come in contact with the following lecture THE DEATH OF A SMOKER, may not heed its advice, but the evidence presented will have to be accepted by all thinking people.lp5545-BC read more
